UNDER 21?For Those Under 21, In The Blue World The Action Doesn’t Set With the Sun (South Shore, Lake Tahoe, Calif./Nev.) – In response to the growing needs of vacationing families with teenagers and college students frequenting South Shore Lake Tahoe for its broad array of daytime activities, the Blue World has created a second nightlife for the under 21.
While parents are seeking headliner entertainment or tempting Lady Luck at the slots and table games at any one of South Shore’s award winning casinos, teenagers looking for hip places to hang out and meet other teens after the sun sets will find state-of-the art arcades, movie theaters, ice-skating rinks, heated swimming pools, night-skiing, and hot spots tailored to their own age group.
There are a host of arcades in the downtown area where teens can check out the latest games and play against one another in virtual realities. The GameWorld Arcade inside the Horizon Casino Resort offers kids of all ages one of the best sources of high-tech entertainment, including a thrilling run down the slopes via virtual reality, race at Daytona, or jet pilot. Harrah’s, Harveys, and Mont Bleu also offer an arcade and encourage parents to plan an evening for their children in a safe, fun environment while they explore life on Blue Avenue. There is also an arcade in the Heavenly Village which features air hockey, foos-ball, ping-pong, pinball, and more. Filled to the brim with teenagers almost every weekend, the arcades are a great place for kids to meet new friends.
Two theaters in the downtown area bring the latest Hollywood blockbusters to the big screen. A new 8-plex Cinemax theater has opened in the Heavenly Village, and the Horizon Stadium Cinema inside the Horizon Casino Resort is located adjacent to the casino arcade and makes a perfect all-inclusive after dinner.
The Heavenly Village, with an arcade, its unique shops, local boutiques, Cold Stone Creamery and Nestle Toll House Café, and multiple restaurants, is a high-energy, unique place for families with teenagers to check out. In addition, outdoor gas fireplaces and live music offer an abundance of safe après dinner options.
During ski season, freeriders can enjoy Heavenly’s terrain as well as a 22-foot-Zaugg pipe cutter after dark, giving Heavenly the largest superpipe in Tahoe. Also during the winter, Heavenly Village opens its lighted, outdoor ice-skating rink for families to enjoy the crisp Tahoe evening while skating and soaking in the mountain village ambience. Skate rentals are available. The City of South Lake Tahoe ice arena, located in the Recreation Complex 1.5 miles from the Village, is an indoor NHL standard-size rink that offers skate rentals and the occasional pick-up hockey game.
Lodging properties’ outdoor heated swimming pools and jacuzzis are open in the evening and available for teenagers as a great destination for relaxing and socializing. The City of South Lake Tahoe swimming pool is located in the Recreation Complex 1.5 miles from the Heavenly Village and is open to the public and features a slide and diving board as well as designated times for “free swim.”
No city is complete without its own amusement park, and at Tahoe Amusement Park, open for the summer, teens are provided endless entertainment long into the evening, including rides, live music and shows, arcades, and food.
Tahoe Bowl on Fremont Street offers families a place to spend an evening together or parents can let older children bowl a game or two on their own while they have a cocktail across the street at the Tudor Pub.
The Kahle Community Center in Stateline, NV sponsors a year-round Friday Night Teen Scene where local and visiting teens, grades six through twelve, gather to shoot hoops, play volleyball or arcade games, watch movies, and work out from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m.
Tahoe Gymnastics on Eloise Avenue sponsors a Saturday Kids’ Night Out where parents can leave their children for a night of games, trampoline time, movies, and more every third Saturday of each month.
The Bijou Skate Park, adjacent to the disc golf course in the community park, is a creative option. The free skate park is rated one of the top five public skate parks in California and draws local and visiting talent alike.
The Golden Cabaret Theater at the Horizons Casino Resort is featuring the Chipper Lowell Experience nightly throughout the summer except Tuesdays. This high-energy, madcap whirlwind of award-winning stand-up comedy, bizarre magic, dangerous juggling, sidesplitting improv, contemporary music, and modern dance is "Family Friendly" at the 7:30 p.m. show, while the 9:30 p.m. show is strictly for "Mature Audiences Only.” For reservations, call 775-588-6211.
