Biking

Whether your style is mountain biking or skinny tire riding, the choices available for biking in the Blue World are nearly endless.

Ask a healthy looking local where they ride or check with one of the shops about what not to miss. They will probably offer Flume Trail, Mr. Toad’s or Powerline. Go with it. Bike Map.

Paved Bike Trails

Pope-Baldwin Bike Path Parallel to Hwy 89, it begins where the four-lane highway narrows to two lanes - 1 mile north of the intersection Hwy. 89/50. This popular path passes through Camp Richardson with side trips to Pope and Baldwin Beach, the Tallac Historic Site, and the Taylor Creek Visitor Center.

South Lake Tahoe Bike Path Starting along Hwy. 50 at El Dorado Beach, this path connects to other bike trails and lanes throughout South Lake Tahoe and into Nevada. Part of the meandering bike trail bridges over Trout Creek and the Upper Truckee River with views across Truckee Marsh to Lake Tahoe. Bike lanes along Hwy. 50 continue to the Pope-Baldwin Bike Path.

Mountain Biking Trails

Angora Lakes Climb An eight mile pavement and dirt trail excursion, this outing is suitable for beginners. Cyclists begin at the interesection of Tahoe Mountain Road and Angora Ridge Road, about a mile east of Fallen Leaf Lake. Despite its minor 800 foot elevation gain, this route offers some stunning views of Fallen Leaf Lake and Lake Tahoe as well as groves of aspen. At trail's end, cyclists can sip the lemonade served at Angora Lakes Resort or take a dip in the lake.

Tahoe Rim Trail This trail follows the ridges and mountain tops that circle Lake Tahoe. Winding for 150 miles through national forest, wilderness, and state park lands, the trail crosses thick conifer forests and wildflower-filled meadows, meanders alongside aspen-bordered creeks, and skirts the shores of crystalline lakes. Along the route, dense woods part to reveal tantalizing glimpses of sparkling water framed between the branches of ancient firs. Limitless vistas sweep around the horizon from atop high granite peaks. Trek deep into the mountains for a prolonged wilderness experience.

The Flume Trail A narrow dirt trail balances above a ridgeline climbing from 6,990 feet to 8,150 feet on a scenic journey past spectacular views of Lake Tahoe. Named for the wooden flume which transported water and logs to Virginia City, Nevada during the Comstock silver mining boom of the mid-1800s, the Flume Trail has been labeled one of Western America's Top Ten routes. The trail begins at Spooner Lake, ascends five miles to Marlette Lake, where the actual Flume Trail begins. A 4-1/2 mile long narrow singletrack departs from the west end of the lake, following the ridge to the north 1,300 feet above Lake Tahoe.

Mr. Toad's Wild Ride Named for its exciting descent on the Saxon Creek Trail, Mr. Toad's Wild Ride plunges downhill at a drop of nearly 1,500 feet in less than six miles. The advanced ride begins at Big Meadow Trailhead, heading north on the Tahoe Rim Trail from the access point on Hwy.89 toward Luther Pass. After reaching the 8,820 feet summit, the wild ride really begins. The descent is sometimes steep and technical and there are some corners that are nicely banked for high-speed turning.
